Lee Miller, Prison Guard, Buchenwald, 1945

The third image of our virtual exhibition of the Lee Miller's pictures is dramatically different from the previous two. It is a portrait of a badly beaten prison guard at Buchenwald, right after the liberation of the camp by the Americans. His gaze is totally absent, his life likely close to its end. It reminds in many way an image that will be shot more than 20 years later, the shell-shocked American soldier of McCullin, an image that for its power is still today the symbol of the anti war movement. But the image of Lee Miller goes beyond that: it makes you feel the pain and the horror of a Buchenwald prison guard, not the one of an American soldier. A criminal for which no one could have any sympathy. The photograph is a powerful condemnation of the horror of the war beyond any justifiable cause: things are never black or white.

La terza immagine della nostra mostra virtuale sulle fotografie di Lee Miller e' drammaticamente diversa dalle due precendenti. Si tratta del ritratto di una guardia al campo di concentramento di Buchenwald, appena dopo la liberazione del campo. Lo sguardo totalmente assente, la sua vita probabilmente vicina alla fine. Ricorda in molti modi un'immagine che verra' scattata oltre 20 anni dopo, il soldato americano traumatizzato di McCullin, un'immagine che per il suo potere e' ancora oggi il simbolo del movimento contro la guerra. Ma l'immagine di Lee Miller va oltre: ci fa sentire la pena e l'orrore di una guardia di Buchenwald, non di un soldato americano. Un criminale per cui nessuno puo' avere alcuna simpatia. La fotografia e' una potente condanna della guerra al di la di qualunque possibile gustificazione: le cose non sono mai bianche o nere.
