"She is pressing herself against a wall, a maleficent silhouette… her face covered with a white circle, the floor ritually chequered, while a tortoise crawls forward in a corner." Although Francesca Woodman was born in Boulder, Colorado, she spent almost every summer with her family in Italy. This picture, as many of hers, was actually taken in Italy, near Rome. The ability of Francesca Woodman to capture the psychoanalytic and the historic aspects simultaneously is uncanny.
