Lucas Cranach the Elder, Allegory of Justice, 1537(English)
Finally I was able to visit the fantastic exhibition "The World of Lucas Cranach" at the Bozar in Brussels. Cranach is a German Renaissance painter extremely popular nowadays. The Louvre just bought the Three Graces after a big found raising effort. I have to say that personally I was never really attracted by Cranach, nor by German Renaissance. As compared to Italian Renaissance painters, Cranach looks almost primitive, medieval. But I have to say, after having visited the magnificent exhibition in Brussels, that its directness is indeed a spectacular strength: where Italian Renaissance is 'only' sublimely beautiful, Cranach is erotic and sensual. Sometime we have to admit that beauty is not the only thing in art...

Finalmente ho potuto visitare la fantastica mostra "Il mondo di Lucas Cranach" al Bozar di Bruxelles. Cranach è un pittore tedesco rinascimentale estremamente popolare attualmente. Il Louvre ha appena comprato le Tre Grazie, dopo aver lanciato una impegnativa raccolta di fondi. Devo dire che personalmente non sono mai stato particolarmente attratto da Cranach, né dal rinascimento tedesco. Rispetto a pittori del Rinascimento italiano, Cranach sembra quasi primitivo, medievale. Ma devo dire, dopo aver visitato la magnifica mostra di Bruxelles, che la sua immediatezza è davvero una forza spettacolare: dove il rinascimento italiano è 'solo' bello in maniera sublime, Cranach è erotico e sensuale. A volte dobbiamo ammettere che la bellezza non è l'unica cosa che conta nell'arte ...
